zen mind, beginner's mind

What is zen mind, beginner's mind?  It is the direct experience of the 'world'.  Antonio Salemme, the great 20th C. painter and sculptor said often, "you must always be a beginner.  he was quoting Suzuki Roshi who said this was the secret to zen practice as well as to the arts.  It is direct experience rather than conceptual experience.  You see the movements of brush with color here and now, in presence.  In this experience doubt doesn't occur.  It is what it is.  A painting becomes the harmonious balance and synthesis of all that goes into its creation.  The artist conducts the various aspects of the medium.  The work becomes an expression of brush, color, motif (world) and his or her personality, all at once, in spontaneity.  It is spontaneous expression and a balance of those archetypal principles that are the foundation of the artfrom.  You don't achieve this intellectually.  It requires a deeper surrender and intuitive intelligence.  It is essentially music and can be appreciated as such.  Being receptive is key.  This takes you beyond conceptual experience, ie. the pidgeon-holing that the mind tends to do based on previous experience and pre-conceptions, into the direct experience of the immediate values of tone and value.  I call this practice 'the aesthetics of spontaneity'. Questions?  Discussion?
